    Description

Symbio Wildlife Park is a small, ZAA-accredited wildlife park in Helensburgh, 45 minutes south of Sydney, that punches well above its 16-acre footprint. Koalas, kangaroos you can hand-feed, red pandas, meerkats, a Splash Park and an adventure playground all sit inside the same walking loop — it's the kind of zoo a family can finish in a day without feeling rushed.

    Why We Love It

    • Walk-through kangaroo paddock where the kids actually hand-feed the wallabies and roos — close enough that the animals climb up for the food, not a "look but don't touch" pen.

    • Splash Park comes with admission — the only zoo splash park within three hours of Sydney. Pack swimmers in summer and a half-day visit stretches into a full one.

    • Small enough to actually finish in one visit at 16 acres — no death-march loops, no kids melting down before the koala because they ran out of legs.

    • Paid Animal Encounters with real keeper time — koala, red panda, meerkat and penguin sessions where you get hands-on minutes with the keeper, not a 30-second photo handover.

    • Adventure playground for between-enclosure energy bursts — flying foxes, climbing walls, trampolines and slides, so the under-7s have somewhere to burn off the excitement between animal stops.

    • Quieter than Taronga or Featherdale mid-week and outside school holidays — useful for kids who shut down in big-zoo crowds.

    Tips

    • Book online to save: tickets are about $3 cheaper per adult or child when booked through the website versus paying at the gate.

    • Kids under 3 are free: no ticket needed for the under-3s.

    • Bring swimmers in summer: the Splash Park is included in admission. Pack swimmers, a towel and sun protection — there are no bodies of water, just soft non-slip splash pads.

    • Animal Encounters sell out: paid koala, red panda, meerkat and penguin sessions need to be booked ahead — especially for weekends and school holidays.

    • NRMA members get a discount: flash the card or use the NRMA member deal at checkout for a saving on entry.

    • Companion Card free entry: the venue accepts the Companion Card for a carer to enter free.

    • Picnic-friendly: BYO food and non-alcoholic drinks are welcome, with three covered picnic shelters and open lawn. Reviewers say the on-site kiosk is on the pricey side.

    • Easiest by train: Helensburgh station is on the South Coast line and the park is a short ride-share or walk from there.
