Sydney Zoo

Sydney Zoo
Description
Sydney Zoo is a flat, easy-walking zoo in Bungarribee, built around 150+ species across Africa, Asia, Australia and Primate Boulevard precincts plus a full aquarium under the same ticket. It's the newer, easier-to-navigate alternative to Taronga — no hills, no ferry, no steps — and the only combined zoo and aquarium in NSW.
Why We Love It
Flat and pram-friendly — no hills or steps anywhere on site, which makes a half-day with a toddler and a baby in the carrier feel possible, not punishing.
The world's largest Reptile and Nocturnal House is a climate-controlled, dimly-lit loop with snakes, frogs, lizards and small mammals at kid eye-level — gold on hot or rainy days.
Aquarium under the same ticket — sharks, penguins, a saltwater croc and a snapping turtle, all included with zoo entry. Worth the trip on its own.
Free keeper talks every 30 minutes plus paid animal encounters (camel, capybara, croc, elephant, giraffe, koala, lion, rhino, tiger) and Zookeeper for a Day programs in Mini, Cadet and Accessible formats.
Big seasonal events — Bluey-style character shows, Dinosaur and Ice Age installations, and the annual after-dark Glow light experience that turns the precinct into a luminous night walk.
Small shaded playground inside the zoo with a sand pit and climbing structure — enough to reset toddlers halfway through the loop without leaving the gates.

Tips
Book online: Tickets are reliably cheaper online than at the gate and time slots can sell out on busy weekends and school holidays.
Under-2s are free: No ticket needed for babies under 2; child tickets apply from age 2 up.
Unlimited Pass for repeat visits: Pays for itself after about two visits a year — but does not always cover special events like Glow or the dinosaur installations.
Animal encounters have age limits: Each encounter (elephant, giraffe, lion, etc.) has its own minimum age and supervision rules — check the specific encounter page before booking.
Aim for 9am or after 1pm: Mid-morning is the school excursion crush. Open at 9 for the first keeper talks, or arrive after lunch when the buses leave.
Western Sydney heat is no joke: Despite the flat layout, much of the loop is exposed — hats, sunscreen and refillable water bottles are essential in summer.
BYO food is fine: Designated picnic areas welcome outside food, on top of the on-site cafes, kiosks and eatery.
Glow runs after dark in winter: The annual Glow light installation operates May–June; it's a separate ticket and a very different vibe to a daytime visit.
Reptile & Nocturnal House for wet or hot days: It's climate-controlled and undercover — the strongest pivot when the weather turns.
