Nielsen Park (Shark Beach)

Nielsen Park (Shark Beach)
Description
Nielsen Park is the kind of harbour beach that makes you wonder why you ever bothered wrestling a pram across the sand at Bondi. Tucked into Vaucluse within Sydney Harbour National Park, it centres on Shark Beach — a calm, sheltered cove with virtually no waves and a seasonal shark net, making it one of the safest spots for little ones to splash around in Sydney.
Why We Love It
Calm, virtually wave-free water thanks to the sheltered harbour position and seasonal shark net (October to April), so toddlers can paddle without being bowled over.
Three huge shaded picnic areas under magnificent fig and eucalyptus trees, with some tables and free BBQs — perfect for a full day out or birthday gatherings.
On-site playground within the park grounds, giving kids something to do when they've had enough of the sand.
Wheelchair-accessible ramp to the beach from the promenade (newly built during the 2024 renovation), plus accessible pathways, toilets, and parking.
The Nielsen cafe right on the waterfront serving coffee from 7am, plus light meals, ice cream, and a full seasonal lunch menu — no need to pack the entire kitchen.
Hermitage Foreshore Track starts here — a stunning 1.8 km harbourside walk with Opera House and Harbour Bridge views, great for older kids who need to burn more energy.

Tips
Arrive before 9am in summer: Parking along Greycliffe Avenue is free but fills fast on sunny weekends and holidays. Weekdays and cooler months are much quieter.
No lifeguards: Shark Beach is not patrolled — supervise children closely in the water at all times.
Shark net is seasonal: The net is installed from October to April only. Outside swimming season, there is no net.
No dogs allowed: Nielsen Park is a national park — pets are prohibited (certified assistance animals only).
BYO sun protection for the beach: The park has great shade but the beach itself has very little — bring an umbrella or beach tent.
Bus 325 from Circular Quay: Takes about 35 minutes. Stop at Vaucluse Rd opp Nielsen Park. Routes 324 and 386 also serve the area.
Combine with Vaucluse House or Hermitage Foreshore track: To make a full day of it, you can check out the historic Vaucluse House and grounds or take a lovely stroll on the Hermitage Foreshore track.
