Charles Darwin Walk

Charles Darwin Walk
Description
The Charles Darwin Walk in Wentworth Falls is a gentle 2.4 km creek-side bush track in the Blue Mountains that links Wilson Park to the top of one of the state's most iconic waterfalls. Reopened in September 2025 after flood repairs, it's been rebuilt with smooth paths, boardwalks and bridges — about as family-friendly as a Blue Mountains walking trail gets.
Why We Love It
Gentle Grade 3 track mostly flat with only a handful of short stair sections, so little legs can handle a proper bushwalk without a meltdown.
Creek alongside you the whole way with small cascades, shallow rock pools and shady overhangs where kids can stop and dip their toes.
A waterfall payoff at the end at the Wentworth Falls lookout — a 187 metre cascade into the Jamison Valley that's a genuine wow moment for kids.
Do as much as you want since it's out-and-back — turn around at Weeping Rock or Queen's Cascades if the littlest ones are flagging.
Free parking and toilets at Wilson Park with picnic tables at the trailhead, so lunch and a pit stop sort themselves out.
Car-free option from Sydney since Wentworth Falls station sits a short walk across the highway from the trailhead — a two-hour train ride and you're there.
Cool and partially shaded in summer with the bush canopy and creek corridor staying damp and cool even when Sydney is melting. There is limited shade for a little while at the start of the trail.

Tips
Not pram-friendly: Steps, rocks and boardwalks make prams a struggle — bring a baby carrier for under-twos.
Supervise closely near water: The creek is unfenced and the falls lookout has steep drops — hold little hands.
Go early on weekends and school holidays: Wilson Park car park fills up fast; weekday mornings are much quieter.
Pack layers: The Blue Mountains run 5-10°C cooler than Sydney and the creek corridor stays cool year-round.
Bring water and snacks: There's no kiosk on the track; the closest cafes are in Wentworth Falls village, 5-10 minutes' walk from Wilson Park.
Snake awareness in warmer months: It's a bush track — adults should lead the group and keep kids on the path.
No dogs allowed on parts of the track: Part of the track sits inside Blue Mountains National Park, which is a no-dogs area.
