Central Gardens Wildlife Exhibits

Central Gardens Wildlife Exhibits
Description
Central Gardens Nature Reserve in Merrylands West is one of western Sydney's best-kept secrets — a free, council-run wildlife reserve where kids can see kangaroos, wallabies and emus up close without spending a cent. Set across 12 hectares of bushland, lakes and picnic lawns, it's a low-stress, low-cost alternative to the big paid zoos and consistently ranks as the #1 thing to do in Merrylands.
Why We Love It
Free wildlife exhibits with kangaroos, wallabies, emus, wombats, black swans, ducks, cockatoos and finches on a shaded loop near the toilet block — no entry fee, no parking fee.
Two playgrounds in one reserve including a 2020-upgraded all-abilities playground near Paton Street with a liberty swing, sand pit with water pump, in-ground trampolines and inclusive ramp structure.
Small nocturnal house tucked into the reserve where curious kids can spot possums and fruit bats — a fun mini-adventure after the open-air enclosures.
Free electric BBQs and shaded picnic shelters in the Yarrabee and Pinaroo picnic areas, so you can turn a quick visit into a proper family day out without packing a stove.
Accessible boardwalk to the lake built back in 1993, letting prams and wheelchairs roll right up to the edge to feed the ducks.
Daily waterfall switch-on around 11am against the old sandstone quarry face — a small daily moment of theatre that toddlers love.
A hidden gem in western Sydney with bush trails, lakes, two playgrounds and native animals all on the one site, perfect as a half-day picnic outing.
Good To Know
Tips
It's genuinely free: No entry fee for the reserve or the animal enclosures, free parking at both lots, and free electric BBQs in the picnic areas — one of the best-value family outings in Sydney.
Time it around the animals: The animal enclosures open 9am-4pm daily, even though the reserve itself opens earlier and closes later — arrive mid-morning if wildlife is the main draw.
BYO picnic — no on-site cafe: The Norrie Maley Kiosk is a hireable function room, not a walk-up cafe, so pack food and drinks (Stockland Merrylands is a 5-minute drive if you need supplies).
Book a shelter for parties: The Yarrabee and Pinaroo picnic areas and the Norrie Maley Kiosk can all be reserved through Cumberland Council for birthdays and family gatherings.
Set expectations on koalas: There is a koala sanctuary behind the waterfall, but families consistently report you'll only spot one "if you're really lucky" — let kids know the kangaroos and emus are the headline act.
No dogs allowed: Strictly enforced by council rangers to protect the wildlife — leave the dog at home.
Easy by public transport: Bus routes 806 and 818 stop at "Central Gardens Park" on Merrylands Rd, or it's a 13-minute walk from Merrylands Station on the T2 line.
Allow 1-2 hours: A typical visit is an animal loop (30-45 min) plus playground and picnic — best for under-10s and a great half-day rather than a full-day outing.
